Zun Zun Egui – Shackle’s Gift

Born out of a trip to Mauritius, the Bristol band’s second album is an investigation of that country’s folk rhythms married to some Hammer of the Gods type guitar work.  It’s a multinational album by a multinational band, full of experiments with disparate world genres, classic rock signifiers, and nods to the freeform jazz world that Zun Zun Egui came out of.  At its heart, though, it’s a spiky guitar rock album, meaning that the band is moving definitively away from their early experimental EPs and more towards a shot at mainstream acceptance.  Whether this is good or not belongs to the future; as it stands, Shackle’s Gift is a solid global party album.
